GEOG 4800 – Environmental Issues and Policies – Fall 2021

This course introduces the theory and practice of environmental and social impact assessment. Assessment involves a systematic identification and evaluation of the potential effects on the physical, biological, cultural, and socioeconomic components of proposed projects like oil and gas pipelines, open pit mines, incinerators, airport developments, etc. Impact assessment is now mandated by legislation in over 100 countries, and its use is expanding into the corporate world. Many projects also generate human rights issues including displacement of Indigenous and other peoples. The course will also cover the development of international standards with respect to human rights and displacement, and explore new developments in the field of assessment.

Prerequisite: Completion of 60 credits (any discipline) or permission of instructor.
