This course focuses on globe’s capacity to safeguard sustainable access to water resources, both in terms of quality and quality, and our ability to develop resiliency against water-related hazards (drought, flooding, water borne disease). The dynamic interrelationships among the often-competing interests of water supply for drinking and human well-being (e.g., sanitation and hygiene); for economic activity and development, including industrial demands and food and energy production; and for preserving and protecting ecosystems and ecosystem services, will be examined in depth to understand the roots of the water resources crisis as well as to identify potential solutions. The role of good governance (e.g., science-based policy, environmental law, and community planning), transboundary cooperation, political stability, and international organizations in achieving water security will be evaluated within the context of the water-food-energy-climate nexus.
