GEOG 4990 – Sustainability and Social Change – Winter 2022

This project-based course will explore the connections between environmental challenges and social structures. Barriers to change are often significant and these can impair the transition to a more sustainable, equitable, and stable future. Topics explored include sustainable food production and the ascendancy of palm oil, debates on electric vehicles and the sustainability of lithium mining for batteries, plastic waste and the use of alternatives, energy from waste, and advancing the circular economy. We will also explore how holistic, ecosystem-based thinking and action can drive social change.
