GEOG 4990 – Environmental Justice – Winter 2022

This course will examine environmental issues through the lens of human rights and social justice. Using an interdisciplinary approach, students will develop a theoretical understanding to help understand how loss of biodiversity, climate change, and deforestation affects people and communities. The course will cover different conceptions of environmental justice, history, political dimensions, and issues at the global scale. Case studies will include material on pollution ‘hot spots,” and an intersectional approach will take into account gender disparities, poverty, and Indigeneity. There will also be an emphasis on environmental policy and planning.

Prerequisite: Completion of 30 credits (any discipline) or permission of instructor.
